Thanks to Brandee Younger the harp feels ‘So Alive’ again (incl. free mp3)

The harp is a multi-stringed instrument that falls in the category of chordophones. Together with its precursors it is one of the oldest instruments and provides a uniquely smooth and graceful sound. In medieval times and in antiquity the harp was one of the most popular musical instruments in nearly all cultures. Unfortunately it is past its best and has been relegated to a niche existence in genres like classical music, folk and jazz.

With her modern music Brooklyn-based harpist Brandee Younger is on a mission preventing the string instrument from falling into oblivion. By defying genres and labels, the versatile harpist found her unique niche between traditional and non-traditional harp arenas. She effortlessly performs a wide-ranging repertoire between classic, jazz, soul and hip hop. As a result she’s in high demand and attracts the attention of well-known artists, producers and groups like the jazz luminaries Jack DeJohnette, Ravi Coltrane and Charlie Haden or the hip hop heavyweights Common and Talib Kweli, all of whom she has worked with.

Brandee just released her long-awaited debut EP ‘Prelude’ which is highly reminiscent of legendary jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby. With jazz drummer E.J. Strickland and bassist Dezron Douglas as well as songstress Niia, it features a load of talent. Although Niia is best known for singing on Wyclef Jean’s 2007 hit ‘Sweetest Girl (Dollar Bill)’, her collaboration with Mrs. Younger displays the full potential of her silky voice. Hence ‘So Alive’ is a compelling soul jazz composition, in which all instruments are melded to a haunting universe centred around Niia’s celestial voice. Beguiling musical subtlety in these times of loundness. Grab your free download here:
