If ‘coming events cast their shadows before’, Jagwar Ma’s debut video announces that big things are going to happen next year. While the brilliant single ‘Come Save Me’ is scheduled for February 2012, its video is already making massive waves through the net. No surprise as the song combines a catchy feel-good hookline, authentic vintage-flavour and top-notch production with a fancy video.
Very impressing, considering that this is only a debut. Jagwar Ma is a solo project of former Lost Valentinos member Jono Ma. He’s an Australian musician and producer, who’s already composed for the Australian TV show ‘The Slap’. Also he was able to win producer/remixer authority Ewan Pearson over to mix ‘Come Save Me’.
The result is amazing. ‘Come Save Me’ combines the positivity and catchiness of The Beatles’ 60s pop with Phil Spector’s dense, reverberant sound, The Chemical Brothers’ big beats and Tame Impala’s new psychedelic rock flair. It sounds retro but not dated and is an instant earworm. All this combined with the decent video make this one a safe winner!
Have a look at the classy clip in which all sounds/instruments of the song are visualised in many shapes and colours.
Andrei Swipe is an upcoming Russian DJ, musician and producer. He graduated from music school and established a preference for electronic music afterwards. He spent his formative years in St. Petersburg’s famous Akvarel nightclub – where he first attended partys and later on spun records, warming up for acts like Till von Sein, Jeremy P. Caulfield, Hiroshi Watanabe and others.
After several years of observing and listening, Andrei started to make his own music in 2009. So far he has released via the Polish Pierogi Records label, the American Nightrain Music and the Mexican Bit Records imprint. Last week the German Deep Night Music label added the talented producer to their roster with the single ‘10 Days Only’.
The title track is a smooth signature house/lounge tune reminiscent of the music that Naked Music put out during the third wave of deep house in the early 2000s. This one’s a bit more tracky, but with the deep chords and the laid-back vocals of Jen, it displays the same musicality and relaxed vibe as Blue Six’ lounge classic ‘Sweeter Love’ for example. Beside the neat production the vocals develop a certain magic. That’s why we recommend to check Jen’s Subsoundz Quartet with the track ‘Oh You’ – as featured on our Mixed Tape ‘White Waves’ – as well.
2morrows Victory is an up-and-coming hip hop collective from Southwest London made up of Rafael Powell, Alex G B, Alan Baltic, and Greg B (a London based rapper from Chicago). The members met through their shared hobby, fixie bikes/cycling, and decided to start a band when they discovered their concordant tastes. The creative community is complemented by further members who are responsible for the groups artwork, illustration, photography and filming.
With all these constructive mainstays, their unique take on hip hop and Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Music taking care of their management, the collective is bound to have success … if not today, then tomorrow – cause that’s what their name stands for! The pseudonym arose from the band’s ambition to focus on sustainable accomplishments through slow and solid advancement as opposed to immediate, but short-lived success. But hey: 2morrows Victory shines today! At least we feel so.
Their first EP ‘Food’ which was released in October and their latest offering ‘Lost and Found’ granted the South London group a luminous kick-off. With diverse influences such as Madlib, Little Dragon, Coldplay and James Blake the band sounds quite different than your average hip hop Joe – mixing their live approach and affinity to British indie music with refreshing modern sounds and smart rhymes. Check out the dope jams and videos below and support them earning their victory today, not 2morrow!
Wide Open Mind is a music collective from São Paulo, Brazil, which was featured on our Mixed Tape ‘Vision Pearl’ with ‘Little Bird’. As it’s name suggests, the project has a wide focus – especially when it comes to connecting the dots between house, nu jazz, broken beats, downtempo, instrumental hip hop, lounge, latin and other forms of popular music.
Paulo Tomé, who won Rolling Stone’s ‘Song of the Month’ in his own country, is the mastermind behind the collective. He says that their aim is ‘to use the infinite musical possibilities to create infinite music, disregarding genre boundaries of any kind.’ Most of the resulting tracks end up between hypnotic hip hop/trip hop and house and remind us of the candid music that was made during the heyday of nu jazz.
So far the project has released records via the US-label System Recordings, the Spanish Chocolat Soul Records imprint and contributed their melange tracks to sound stations of two transatlantic Airlines. Currently they are working on an album trilogy. Listen to the easygoing house tune ‘Mood’ we picked via the www.soundcloud.com player below:
The soul/gospel singer Gianna Charles from Vienna has been around for a while. After several releases at the beginning of the millennium, we lost track of her until recently. While she recorded and toured with several producers/projects including Parov Stelar and Supermax through the last years, she has a few banging tracks in the pipeline, due to be released next year.
For her latest tunes she teamed up with the up-and-coming Austrian producers Fab Fusion & Mez whom we featured a few weeks ago with the sublime tune ‘Obtaining’, which he produced for Viennese chanteuse Soia. What we’ve heard so far from the collabo with Gianna Charles sounds as promising as this gem.
With its fat, spacey synths, stuttering syncopated kick drum patterns and funky hesitations ‘I Need You’ is on a par with the ostentatious r&b/hip hop hybrids Timbaland has been tailoring for the cream of r&b artists like Aaliyah, Brandy, Ginuwine and many more.
‘Walk Away’ is a rather laid-back affair with bubbling bass sounds, deep keys, subtle half-time beats and emotive vocals. Apart from Gianna’s absorbing vocal delivery, the production quality of both tracks is truly Mez-merising! We are looking forward to hearing more from this newly-formed project.
