The multi-faceted Somali-Canadian artist Mocky certainly falls into the categories of jokers and musical entertainers. Hardly surprising that this jack of all trades succeeded in many fields of his occupation during the last five to ten years. Whether as a singer, rapper, producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter or composer: he’s been productive in all imaginable ways. While he released four albums under his own moniker, he has co-written and co-produced songs for Jamie Lidell, Feist, Nikka Costa, Gonzales and many others. Moreover he’s been a favoured sideman – usually on drums, keyboards, bass or guitar – who played in shows and/or recordings for fellow musicians like Jane Birkin, Gonzales and Jamie Lidell. His filmscore for ‘UFO In Her Eyes’, a movie by Chinese director Xiaolu Guo, is another notable achievement.
As we’re big time fans of Mocky’s music and performing skills, we we’re happy to feature his track ‘How Will I Know feat. Jamie Lidell’ on our Mixed Tape 03 back in 2004. Since then Mocky kept breaking the mould music-wise, while constantly maintaining his high standard.
Recently, Mocky’s relocated from his long-time home Berlin to Los Angeles. In the course of his move he started to leak new songs designated for his upcoming release. Unsurprisingly, the new material surprises with yet another facet of this truly eclectic artist. ‘When You Laugh (feat. Hilary Gay)’ is a beautiful dream pop song, transporting the LA easiness thoroughly. The delicate choral and string arrangement and Hilary Gay’s celestial voice will caress your auditory canal like a gentle summer breeze. His second offering is a jazzy instrumental called ‘Upbeat Thing/Michael Mc Donald Trump’. Check the prolific sounds via the www.soundcloud.com player below.
